Wound care and dressing in Patong

Wounds behave differently in the tropics. What would scab over quietly at home can turn red and angry within a day in Patong heat, sweat and seawater. Wound care and dressing in Patong is one of the things we do most, and doing it properly early saves a lot of trouble later.

Walk in any time, day or night. If the wound is on your leg or foot and walking is painful, a doctor can come to your hotel instead.

Why wounds get infected so easily here

Three reasons, and they stack up. Heat and humidity keep the skin damp, which suits bacteria. Sweat and sunscreen loosen dressings so they stop protecting anything. And seawater, pool water and sand carry organisms that a wound in a cooler climate never meets.

That is why we are firm about keeping wounds dry and covered for the first few days, even when you are on a beach holiday and it is the last thing you want to hear.

Scooter road rash

The most common injury we treat in Patong. It looks superficial, and people often clean it themselves with bottled water and carry on. The problem is grit. Small stones and road dirt driven under the skin will keep the wound infected until they come out.

We numb the area, scrub it out properly, remove the debris and dress it. It is not the most pleasant twenty minutes of your holiday, but it is the difference between healing in a week and dealing with a spreading infection.

Coral cuts and sea injuries

Coral cuts are notorious. Coral leaves fragments and living organisms in the wound, so these get infected more often than a normal cut of the same size. Sea urchin spines and shell cuts behave similarly.

We clean the wound out, remove what should not be in there, and start antibiotics where the risk is high. Do not let a coral cut close over with debris still inside it.

Burns

Exhaust pipe burns to the calf are almost a rite of passage on a scooter here. They are deeper than they look and sit in an awkward spot for healing. Cooking burns and severe sunburn blisters need the same careful approach: cool, clean, dress, and protect from infection.

Daily dressing changes

You do not need to manage this alone. Come back daily, or every couple of days, and we will change the dressing, check how it is healing and catch any infection early. Many of our patients drop in on their way to breakfast.

If you are leaving Patong, we send you off with enough dressings and written instructions to keep it going, plus clear signs of when to see a doctor wherever you are.

Signs a wound is infected

  • Redness spreading outward from the edges
  • Increasing pain after day two rather than easing
  • Yellow or green discharge, or a bad smell
  • The area feeling hot and swollen
  • Fever, or feeling generally unwell
  • A red line tracking away from the wound — come in immediately

Tetanus cover

Any dirty wound raises the tetanus question. If your last booster was over 10 years ago, or you genuinely cannot remember, we give one during the same visit.

Common questions about wound care in Patong

Can I swim with a wound?

Not for the first few days, and not at all while it is open or infected. Sea and pool water are the two fastest routes to an infected wound here.

How much does wound care cost?

It depends on size and whether stitches or antibiotics are needed. Follow-up dressing changes cost less than the first visit. Message us for a quote.

Do I need antibiotics?

Not always. Clean wounds treated early often heal without them. We prescribe when the risk or the signs justify it, not routinely.

Can you dress it at my hotel?

Yes, including daily changes if getting to the clinic is difficult.

Will it scar?

Keeping it clean, covered and out of the sun gives you the best result. We will tell you honestly what to expect.
