Rabies vaccination and animal bites
This is the urgent one, so it goes first. Phuket has plenty of stray dogs, cats and monkeys. If an animal has bitten, scratched or even licked broken skin, treat it as serious and come in the same day.
Rabies is close to always fatal once symptoms start, but it is entirely preventable if treatment begins quickly. Wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes, then come straight in. We clean the wound properly, start the vaccine course, and give rabies immunoglobulin where the exposure calls for it.
The course runs over several visits across about a month. If you fly home partway through, we give you a written schedule so a doctor there can finish it.
Tetanus vaccination
Any dirty wound can carry tetanus, and Patong throws up plenty: coral cuts, scooter road rash, cuts from rusty metal, deep scratches. If your last tetanus booster was more than 10 years ago, or you cannot remember it, you need one.
We give the booster during the same visit as the wound care, so it is one trip rather than two.
