If a possible HIV exposure was within the last 72 hours, come in immediately rather than waiting to test. Post-exposure prophylaxis, known as PEP, is a course of medicine that can greatly reduce the chance of infection, but it must start quickly and the sooner the better.
Symptoms worth checking
Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, which is exactly why testing matters. When symptoms do appear, they include discharge, pain or burning when passing urine, sores or ulcers, unusual rashes, pelvic or testicular pain, and unexplained fever with swollen glands.
Do not try to self-treat with antibiotics bought over a counter. Partial treatment can mask an infection while it continues, and it drives resistance.
Treatment
Many infections are cured with a short course of antibiotics or a single injection, and we can start that the same day. Others, such as HIV or hepatitis, are managed long term, and we will explain the options and refer you to specialist care.
If you test positive for something curable, we also talk about telling recent partners. It is an uncomfortable conversation and it stops the infection bouncing back to you.
