Migraine treatment in Patong

A migraine can take a day of your holiday and leave you in a dark hotel room while everyone else is at the beach. When tablets are not touching it, or you are vomiting them straight back up, an injection works when oral medicine cannot. Migraine treatment in Patong is available 24 hours a day at our clinic.

Why migraines flare in Patong

Almost every classic migraine trigger is present here at once. Dehydration in the heat. Bright glaring sunlight off water and sand. Disrupted sleep from late nights and time zone changes. Alcohol, particularly red wine and spirits. Skipped or irregular meals. Long flights. Heat and humidity themselves.

People who get occasional migraines at home often find they get one within days of arriving. It is not bad luck so much as several triggers stacking up simultaneously.

What we can give you

The advantage of coming in is that we are not limited to what you can swallow and keep down. An injection of anti-inflammatory or migraine-specific medicine works faster and bypasses a stomach that is rejecting everything.

We combine that with anti-nausea medicine, which does more than settle the vomiting: nausea medicines have a genuine effect on migraine itself. Where you are dehydrated, an IV drip with fluids helps considerably, and dehydration is often part of why the attack started.

Most people are noticeably better within an hour and can go back to their room and sleep it off rather than losing the whole day.

Making sure it is a migraine

Most headaches here are migraine, tension headache or dehydration. Some are not, and we check.

Seek help urgently for a sudden severe headache that reaches maximum intensity within seconds, a headache with fever and a stiff neck, one following a head injury, one with weakness, numbness, confusion or difficulty speaking, or a headache that is different in character from your usual pattern. Also for a first severe headache over the age of 50.

Heat stroke and dengue both cause severe headache in this climate, and both need treating differently. The doctor examines you rather than assuming.

If you get them regularly

If you already have medicine that works for you and simply ran out or lost it, we can usually prescribe the equivalent available in Thailand. Bring the packet or a photo of the label.

If you are using painkillers most days, mention it. Medication overuse headache is common and counter-intuitive, where the treatment itself perpetuates the headache. It is worth identifying rather than escalating the dose.

Reducing the odds on the rest of your trip

Drink far more water than you think you need in this heat, and add electrolytes on heavy sweating days. Wear good sunglasses, because glare off the sea is a strong trigger. Keep meals reasonably regular. Go easy on alcohol, particularly in the sun. Try to keep sleep roughly consistent. Avoid the hottest hours between 11am and 3pm.
