Flu treatment in Patong

Flu on holiday is a particular kind of bad luck. It arrives fast, flattens you for days, and it is not the same thing as a heavy cold no matter how often people use the words interchangeably. Flu treatment in Patong is available around the clock at our clinic on Prachanukroh Road, and being seen early genuinely shortens it.

Flu or a cold?

The difference is mostly speed and severity. A cold builds over a day or two, centres on the nose and throat, and lets you carry on. Flu hits within hours, with high fever, aching muscles, headache, exhaustion and a dry cough, and puts you in bed.

If you can tell someone the exact hour you started feeling ill, it is probably flu. That sudden onset is the most reliable clue.

Why testing matters here

In Phuket, fever with aches and headache is not automatically flu. Dengue looks almost identical in the first two days, and so can early COVID-19 and some bacterial infections. Telling them apart changes what happens next.

It matters most for pain relief. If dengue is possible, ibuprofen and aspirin are the wrong choice because they increase bleeding risk when platelets fall. We use rapid tests for flu, COVID-19 and dengue so you get treated for what you actually have.

Antiviral treatment

Antiviral medicine such as oseltamivir can reduce how long flu lasts and how severe it gets, but timing is everything. It works best started within 48 hours of symptoms beginning, and its benefit falls away sharply after that.

This is the main reason not to wait it out for three days and then come in. We consider antivirals particularly for people over 65, pregnant women, young children, and anyone with asthma, diabetes, heart or lung conditions.

Supportive treatment

Most people need fever control, fluids and rest. In this heat, fluid loss with a fever is faster than at home, and dehydration is what turns feeling awful into feeling dangerously unwell. If you cannot keep fluids down, we give an IV drip.

We treat the fever and body aches, and give something for the cough where it is stopping you sleeping. Antibiotics do nothing for flu itself, and we will say so, but they matter if a chest infection develops on top.

Warning signs to come back for

Return or go to hospital if you become short of breath or breathless at rest, have chest pain, cough up blood, become confused or very drowsy, have a fever that will not come down after three days, or start improving and then get suddenly worse again. That last pattern often means a secondary bacterial infection.

Flying with flu

Airlines can refuse boarding to someone visibly unwell with a fever, and staff do notice. Flying with blocked sinuses and ears is also genuinely painful and occasionally damaging.

If you are due to travel, come in. We treat you, and where you are well enough we can issue a fit to fly certificate. Where you are not, we will tell you honestly and give you documentation for the airline and your insurer.

Protecting the people you are travelling with

Flu spreads easily in shared rooms and on tours. Keep your distance where you can, cover coughs, wash hands often, and do not share drinks. Most people are infectious from a day before symptoms until about five to seven days after.
