Bronchitis treatment in Patong
A cough that has settled deep in the chest and refuses to leave is exhausting. It keeps you and everyone in the room awake, and it drags on far longer than people expect. Bronchitis treatment in Patong is available 24 hours a day at our clinic on Prachanukroh Road.
What bronchitis is
Bronchitis means inflammation of the airways that carry air into the lungs. When they are inflamed they swell and produce more mucus, which is why you get a persistent productive cough, chest tightness, wheezing and breathlessness on exertion.
Acute bronchitis usually follows a cold or flu, as the infection moves down from the nose and throat into the chest. Most cases are viral.
Why the cough lasts so long
Worth knowing so you are not alarmed. Even after the infection has gone, the airways stay irritated and twitchy for weeks. A cough lasting three weeks after acute bronchitis is normal and does not mean the treatment failed or that you need another course of antibiotics.
What is not normal is a cough that is getting worse rather than slowly better, or one accompanied by fever, breathlessness or coughing up blood.
Antibiotics, honestly
Most acute bronchitis is viral, and antibiotics do nothing for it. Prescribing them anyway is common worldwide and it is poor medicine: it does not shorten your illness, it can upset your stomach, and it drives resistance.
We prescribe antibiotics when there is evidence pointing to bacterial infection, or where you have underlying lung disease and the risk is higher. When you do not need them, we will tell you clearly and explain what will actually help.
What does help
Nebuliser treatment opens the airways quickly when there is wheezing and chest tightness, and most people feel the difference within fifteen minutes. Inhalers continue that at your hotel. Steroids settle the inflammation in more marked cases.
Beyond that: fluids to loosen the mucus, something for the cough at night so you can sleep, and rest. Steam inhalation helps some people, though in Patong humidity the air is already doing much of that work.
Ruling out pneumonia
The important job at the first visit. Pneumonia is an infection of the lung tissue itself rather than the airways, and it needs antibiotics and sometimes hospital care.
The doctor listens to your chest and checks your oxygen level, temperature and pulse. Where the findings raise concern, or where you have a high fever, are breathless at rest, have chest pain on breathing in, or your oxygen is low, we refer you for a chest X-ray the same day.
What makes it worse in Patong
Smoke in bars, traffic fumes along the beach road, air conditioning running cold and dry, and dust in the dry season all irritate already inflamed airways. If you smoke, this is the illness where cutting back genuinely shortens recovery.
People with asthma or COPD need earlier assessment, because bronchitis on top of existing lung disease escalates faster.
When to come back urgently
Return or go to hospital if you are breathless at rest or cannot finish a sentence, if there is chest pain, if you cough up blood, if fever persists beyond three or four days, if your lips look blue, or if you improved and then became suddenly worse.
