Back pain treatment in Patong

Back pain has a way of arriving on holiday. A long flight in a cramped seat, an unfamiliar mattress, hours on a scooter, lifting a heavy case, or a fall that jarred everything. Back pain treatment in Patong is available 24 hours a day, and most cases improve quickly with proper pain relief and sensible advice.

What usually causes it here

Mechanical strain accounts for the majority. Long-haul flights leave the lower back stiff and compressed. Hotel mattresses are often much firmer or much softer than you are used to. Scooters put you in a sustained posture that many people are not conditioned for, and Patong’s hills and speed bumps add jarring.

Then there are the falls. Coming off a scooter, slipping on wet tiles or bathroom floors, or landing awkwardly in the sea. Muay Thai and gym sessions taken up enthusiastically on holiday produce their share too.

What we check for first

Most back pain is muscular and settles. A small proportion is not, and that is what the examination is for.

Tell us immediately if you have numbness around the groin or inner thighs, difficulty passing urine or loss of control of bladder or bowels, weakness in a leg or foot, or severe pain radiating down the leg with numbness. These need urgent assessment, not painkillers and rest.

We also take particular care with back pain following significant trauma, back pain with fever, and back pain with unexplained weight loss, since these point away from simple strain.

Kidney pain is not back pain

Worth separating, because people confuse the two constantly. Pain in the side or the back just under the ribs, particularly with fever, chills, nausea or pain passing urine, may be a kidney infection or a kidney stone rather than a muscular problem.

Both are common here, largely because people are dehydrated. We test urine and examine you properly rather than treating everything in that area as a strain.

Treatment

Effective pain relief comes first, usually anti-inflammatory medicine combined with paracetamol, and muscle relaxants where spasm is a major part of it. Where the pain is severe, an injection settles things faster than tablets.

We give clear advice on movement, because the old instruction to rest flat in bed is outdated and unhelpful. Gentle movement within comfort limits recovers faster than lying still, and prolonged bed rest makes stiffness worse.

Heat helps muscular spasm, ice helps a fresh injury with swelling. Where imaging is needed, we refer for an X-ray and review it with you.

Managing on holiday

Avoid the scooter for a few days if riding brings the pain on, however inconvenient that is. Be careful getting in and out of pools and low beach loungers, since twisting while unsupported is a common way to aggravate it. Take a short walk regularly rather than sitting for hours. Ask for an extra pillow to support your knees at night.

Flying home with back pain

Long flights are hard on an irritated back. Come in before you travel and we will make sure you have adequate pain relief for the journey, plus advice on seating, moving during the flight and managing on arrival. Where your airline needs confirmation you are fit to travel, we can issue a certificate.
